Over 60 million people across the United States are facing severe weather conditions as a major winter storm impacts regions from the Central Plains to the East Coast, according to the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS). The storm is delivering heavy snow, freezing rain, and thunderstorms, creating widespread travel disruptions. The NWS has issued warnings for hazardous road conditions and potential power outages, particularly along the Interstate 70 corridor, which passes through key cities including St. Louis and Indianapolis.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible extended periods without electricity. In response to the escalating weather emergency, the governors of Missouri, Kentucky, and Arkansas have declared states of emergency. These measures are aimed at mobilizing resources and assisting local authorities in clearing roads, restoring utilities, and providing shelter for those affected.

Transportation systems have been severely impacted, with icy roads in central Kansas leading to multiple truck accidents and highway closures. In Kansas City, operations at Kansas City International Airport were temporarily suspended due to icy conditions, causing significant flight delays and cancellations. Emergency responders are working to clear blocked roads and assist stranded drivers as conditions continue to deteriorate. Authorities have deployed additional road crews and snowplows to keep highways passable, but heavy snowfall and freezing rain have slowed progress.

Forecasters predict the storm will continue to move eastward, affecting densely populated areas along the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. Major metropolitan areas, including Washington, D.C., and New York City, are expected to face disruptions in both ground and air travel over the next 24 to 48 hours. Residents in affected regions are advised to monitor weather updates, follow local emergency instructions, and take precautions to stay safe as the storm progresses. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
